Zellies Xylitol Gum & Mints: How many – How often?

Zellies Xylitol Gum and Mints are delicious, but if you only eat one or two a day – this is all you will ever know about Zellies! You see, unless you eat about 5 pieces of gum or 10 mints each day – you will never experience their full dental and health benefits. (Note: Each Zellies Xylitol Mint contains 0.5 grams of xylitol and each piece of Zellies Xylitol Gum contains 1.0 grams of xylitol. You can mix and match products to suit your lifestyle and taste)

The University of Washington determined years ago, that the most effective dose for xylitol was between 6 and 10 grams each day. At this dose plaque disappeared over 6 months. Less than 6 grams did not have as much effect, although every time xylitol is eaten it will help alkalize the mouth for some tooth benefits.

Strive for five times every day!

The only time that a small amount of xylitol will work to prevent cavities is when it is wiped over an infant’s new teeth. Even a tiny amount can prevent problems for a baby. Older children and adults need more than this and frequency is important.

The dental benefits of 6 – 10 grams of xylitol each day in frequent small doses range from reducing gum problems to preventing cavities. When mothers eat xylitol they can stop infecting their baby with cavity-forming bacteria, and prevent the transfer of bad teeth throughout generations of a family with bad teeth. In Finland xylitol is given out at pre-school as a public health measure to stop decay in permanent teeth.

Xylitol for Gum and Periodontal Disease

2 out of 3 adults in the US have gum disease, according to a study published this summer. Plaque irritates the gums and makes them bleed. If this situation is not corrected, it becomes the first stage of gum disease, which will progress and become more damaging to teeth, gums and general health.

  • Problem #1 is that periodontal disease is painless and is rarely diagnosed.
  • Problem #2 is that periodontal disease is a transmissible disease. Kissing and sharing food can spread it to others in the family, and from spouse to spouse.
  • Problem #3 is perhaps the most important problem. The bacteria of gum disease can get into your blood and be involved in general health problems, including arthritis, dementia, digestive problems and pre-term birth.
  • Problem #4 is that the bacteria of gum disease can cause inflammation and a generalized reaction in the body that can pose a risk for high blood pressure, stroke and even heart attack.

For gum health you must eliminate plaque on teeth. Adequate amounts of xylitol and multiple exposures each day will progressively reduce and finally eliminate plaque on teeth. Strive for at least 5 separate exposures with 1-2 grams xylitol at each event (6-10 grams a day). Less than 6 grams a day may not help you. When you take xylitol is also very important. Aim to have your xylitol after meals, drinks and snacks to help balance mouth acidity.

A simple way to ensure that you have enough xylitol is to add one teaspoon (4 grams) of granular xylitol crystals to water and drink this each morning (even better during exercise). Then during the day, eat one or two Zellies Xylitol Mints or Zellies Xylitol Gum after meals, drinks, and snacks to add another 4-6 grams of xylitol to your total daily dose.

Ask Dr. Ellie: Granular Xylitol

Ask Dr. Ellie: Granular Xylitol
  • I started using Closys researching ways to clean my mouth 8 months ago I later found the Dr. Ellie cleaning system and have been using that for about 6 months. Now I have been using zellies for a month. I have now found xylitol toothpaste and mouthwash plus a nasal spray that would probably help me as well. My sinus cavities get very dry. Doesn’t feel like an allergy but a dryness.

I am still following the cleaning system and using zellies. My teeth and gums look good and are looking better all of the time. I’m wondering about the benefits of the new products (toothpaste, mouthwash and nasal spray) I have discovered. I do have periodontal disease. I have been having lots of dental cleanings root planning and antibiotics. Am I on the right track at home? Can I do better?

    • I am a confused by your question and ask you to carefully review what “my system” suggests. Zellies system of care involves controlling mouth acidity by eating a Zellie mint or gum after every meal, snack or drink. Morning and night you use the mouth care system, using only specific Crest Cavity Protection toothpaste – and specific rinses. There cannot be substitutions or “replacements” – or you will not achieve the expected results. It is important to follow the method – as if this were a recipe for a cake! Don’t use water rinsing between the steps – go from one to the next. Each rinse should be one minute long – not more and not less ( with the exception being the Listerine step – which you do for as little as 15 secs but never more than 60 seconds). There is no other toothpaste to use in this system.

I have never found a xylitol toothpaste with ingredients that fit for this system. Most xylitol toothpaste is too coarse and abrasive, most xylitol mouthwash is too acidic, and many of xylitol care products contain glycerin – which is a problem in our system of care. The xylitol nasal spray, on the other hand, may be useful – and I often recommend a couple of squirts up each nostril before bed at night if anyone thinks their sinuses or nasal breathing may be part of the problem.

If you follow the specific Zellies Complete Mouth Care System exactly as we suggest, you should experience great improvements within a couple of months. Don’t forget to keep your toothbrush clean, massage your gums when you brush them (to stimulate circulation), and that nutrition is vital for gum health. I suggest a healthy diet, possibly with the addition of vitamins and probiotics, at least during the time your gums are healing.

We’d love to hear your progress if you follow these recommendations. Although the Zellies Complete Mouth Care System may sound too easy to be true, it will help you control dental disease in your mouth, and this will be a big benefit for your general health.
